Hi Everyone,

Sorry I’ve been so bad about blogging. I’ve been finishing up two books for Inner Traditions publishers, and then I went right into my busy Octoberfest/Halloween season. I should have a little break between now and the Christmas party rush and will hopefully catch up a little. In the meantime, I’m sharing the catalog page and cover design for my forthcoming Tarot Life Lessons: Living Wisdom from the Major Arcana. To those of you who have been following my writing career, the working title of this book was The Tarot Diaries.

The cover of my forthcoming book

I don’t have a release date just yet–that should happen in the next couple of months, but it will be out on an Inner Traditions’ subsidiary, Destiny Books. I am told the famous Tarot and Occult writer, Alejandro Jodorowsky, published on this imprint so I am in good company. Here’s a link to the catalog page:

TarotLifeLessons_CatPage

What’s the other book? That is The Magician’s Girl: The History and Mysticism of Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes. Title/Subtitle also subject to change! More on that as I learn it.

I did a few podcasts and radio appearances in the last few months. My favorites were talking about how the spirit world is presented in Hollywood with Max on Movies, as well as another good LifeBlood podcast with George Grombacher called “Return to the Source.” Check them out if you get a few minutes!

I’m filling up for weekend holiday parties in December, so reach out fast if you’re looking for my tarot services. And of course, I am always taking my regular weekday and weeknight appointments. Looking for a different gift idea? I can make you a custom gift certificate to print, email, or send by phone. Just email me at tarot@nighttimes.com or through this website for more information.

I’m keeping my resolution to keep up my blog and social networks with more regularity. It was a very non-eventful New Year for most everyone I know. On New Year’s Eve, I did get to guest on NewsTalkSTL’s variety show, and if you’re interested, you can see/listen here. Please scroll to the 2:36 mark for my segment.

Me reading cards for Katie Fitzpatrick on NewsTalkSTL 101.9 FM.

Someone asked me why I have been on conservative-leaning radio stations lately. The answer is simple: they are the ones who ask me! I would be happy to appear on KWMU (our NPR station in St. Louis) or any other, but today it seems spirituality is pushed away by much of the media. This is sad for me because I know lots of spiritual people on both sides. Let it be known that in addition to NewsTalkSTL and 97.1 FM, I have appeared on KEZK, Y98, KMOX, KLOU, KDHX and others (these are just the ones I can remember). Plus television (St. Louis channels 4, 5, 11; Nickelodeon and MTV).

I have friends, clients, and family of all political persuasions and it is not my goal to teach anyone what I view as right or wrong; I trust my clients to live their truth and respect others’ lives. Tarot is about seeing one’s unique and personal energy and helping them make the right decisions for them. A spiritual counselor of any kind knows that paths are different and should be appreciated and celebrated as such.

I was thinking this morning about the term “Left-Wing” and “Right-Wing.” It occurred to me that a bird cannot fly without both wings or if one wing is broken. Unity is our only way out of this current mess that our world is in, and if we try to crush the other side, we are destroying ourselves in the long run because WE ARE ONE. I’ve often wondered if aliens ever attacked us if that wouldn’t change our opinion about the other guy. Maybe that is something to hope for. Ha ha.

My cat on the chair, Mimi, is over 22 years old this year!

A Course In Miracles talks about the difficult balance between understanding that the world is illusion and controlling how we live within that illusion. “There is only love and fear,” says the Course, “and fear does not exist.” And yet here we are, in this often fearful place, here to learn and experience Relationship in all its forms. We are here to find unity and connection, echoing the oneness of God (or the Universe, or however you choose to frame it). This is not an Us-versus-Them world if you’re truly spiritual. We know that there are so many shades of gray, and few of us are entirely on board with every issue on our political party (if we even have a political party).

If you’re wondering who to trust for guidance, spiritually, politically, and otherwise, watch out for those who alienate others with different belief systems and check your energy to be sure that you’re not doing it yourself. We all slip into it now and then. Where there is no peace, love, or unity, there are certainly no moments for discussion or teaching to heal. We must find common ground and love even when we don’t always like how someone thinks or lives. Anytime we feel righteous and superior, or fearful and panicky, we can be sure that we are not in a unity mindset and not living from spirit.

The late, great Dr. Wayne W. Dyer said in one of his many books, “God feels good.” And so, if we get “triggered” (to use a popular buzzword), we know that we are out of alignment with God, the Universe, the Source or whatever your view is. Our happiness is inward, and what we believe and how we choose to perceive creates our outer experience. I choose to perceive these troubled times as a dismantling of the old systems to birth new ones. I choose to not take sides, politically or otherwise, knowing that there is truth to Mahatma Gandhi’s words, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” I will love you all, no matter what, even if we disagree and even if you don’t love me. Maintaining conflict separates, teaches nothing, and helps nothing. I’m going to stay in alignment as best as I can on this rocky road, and I hope that I will see you all in good health and happiness at the end of it, my friends.

Whew. When I look back on my Facebook Memories, I see all these complaints about how bad 2018 was, and then 2019, and then 2020 goes without saying. Now, I’m not one to want to perpetuate negative energy, and so even though the weather is gray and chilly, and I’ve gained a few pounds over the holidays, and the protein drink I just got out of my fridge has congealed to something undrinkable, and 2021 was, well… only slightly better than 2020… I’m going to share a few thoughts about this year and my plans for the next.

Firstly, I’m going to be on the radio again on New Year’s Eve! My old pal Tony Colombo (we go back to the 90s alternative music scene when he was at the Point and I did Night Times) and new friend Katie Fitzgerald on NewstalkSTL 101.9 FM are hosting a New Year’s Eve “variety show” format and I should be on early in the 4:00 pm hour. If you aren’t able to tune in, I will post any links to recordings or videos here and on my Media page. If you ARE able to tune in, call for a free tarot card reading!

I’m seriously trying to be better about social networking (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and blogs here). I am learning about how to take better pictures, create content, etc. I have to say that this is not a comfortable world for me. I’m not very photogenic and usually just have one cheesy smile across all photos because otherwise, it’s that “resting bitch face.” Most of my photos have been the same headshots, with no body, varied expressions, or movement. I’m trying to relax and genuinely smile at a mechanical gadget on a tripod, and this feels very false. But here is an effort for you:

Holiday greetings from the dining room table where I do all of my in-person tarot card readings!

So, in the Things I Did Right column for 2021, I had several fun media appearances, I reminded my clients that I do gift certificates for the holidays and was well-rewarded for that, and tarot has been busy as ever. I have continued my personal training and yoga, which has now become an essential part of my life (shoutouts to The Fitness Edge and YogaSix!). I continued my volunteer work at the Wildlife Rescue Center, but cut my hours back a bit and am taking the winter (slow season) off to get more writing done. I started a collection of poetry about this work and, while it is taking a while to complete, I am pretty happy with what I have done so far and have begun sending out some individual poems for publication.

This year I started a study group for A Course In Miracles, and this group has become very special to me and an essential part of my week (message me if you’re interested). I continue with my Buddhist Women’s Group as well, which is also integral to my spiritual growth and overall sanity during such strange years as these.

In the Things I Wish I’d Done Differently column for 2021, my writing has taken a back seat to the tarot, and I’m just not sure how to correct that as those who work for themselves know we have to take the work when we get it because it is our livelihood. There’s a Plath conference next year and I didn’t even send in an abstract to present! This is partly because I am too busy, partly because it is all on Zoom (and aren’t we all sick to death of Zoom events?), and partly because I have been alienated by most of that crowd and am tired of trying to show them something they are not interested in seeing (Academia is the most close-minded place in the world; take it from someone who used to teach).

And then, there are those Strange Events I’m Not Sure How to Categorize; things that feel both right and wrong:

I’ve learned about personal and professional boundaries the hard way. My line of work is emotionally demanding and can form connections that blur these lines. It can be a hard call to distance from someone who’s in a tough personal situation, even though I care. Likewise, sometimes people lean too heavily on me and expect me to fix their lives. Only they can do that. Some professional relationships ultimately strained my family life–that stopped this year.

I also had a misunderstanding with a client that taught me the extent of irrational fear controlling people right now. I learned that standing firm in what I know is the truth, even at the expense of losing a key customer, is the right thing to do. It also taught me what our relationship really was. This is the trouble with being a tarot card reader: we don’t read for ourselves because there are biases there; I wanted to believe in a friendship that wasn’t real when push-comes-to-shove.

There was that whole St. Louis Sound thing at the Missouri History Museum… Ugh. I still groan just thinking about it. I stand by almost everything I said about the exhibit (I posted a correction on part of it). I made a lot of enemies with that blog, but I also resurrected a lot of great music friendships. And I was reminded of what I already knew: that I am brave enough to say it!

These divisive politics of the last couple of years have lost and tested some of my relationships. I feel as I always have, never ascribing a side but voting instead for people and causes. Anger and fear are not going to control me. Nor am I going to label groups of people as good or bad, because I know humanity is much more complicated than that. I believe in promoting empowerment, not victimization (this does not mean I don’t feel compassion, only that I want to elevate the individual). I may not agree with every point of view, but I will not condemn or judge another for thinking differently than me. Even if they do this to me.

And without further ado, my 2022 Resolutions:

I am going to send out more manuscripts for publication. For me, the writing part has been relatively easy and I have FIVE complete or nearly-complete books on my hard drive! (Night Times, a memoir of my days running an alternative rock zine as a single mom in the 1990s; The Magician’s Girl, the mysticism of Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes; The Tarot Diaries, real-life tarot stories; Sylvia Plath’s Early Poems; and a collection of poetry, to be named). Add to that numerous essays and individual poems. I simply hate the submission process, and writers submitting whole books know that this is a very time-consuming process. (Would someone like to be my agent? I will pay you!)

I am going to limit my waste: of food, money, and energy. This means not buying so much at the grocery store that goes bad before I can eat it, or subscribing to an online class I don’t have time to complete, or watching too many videos sent by well-meaning friends, or allowing my writing time to be interrupted with texts, phone calls, etc.

While I love my AppleWatch, I am not going to let it control me with its commands for me to close my move ring, etc. Apple, you are not my master! (Just as I finished that sentence, my watch signaled: “Time to stand!”)

What are your resolutions?

Sylvia Plath’s tarot deck is currently up for auction with Sotheby’s.

“With my gypsy ancestress and my weird luck / And my Taroc pack and my Taroc pack…”

These are famous words from Sylvia Plath’s poem, “Daddy,” one of her most famous ever. And Taroc is another name for the Tarot, as so many of you know already. Since Plath’s cards came up for auction at Sotheby’s, many people have been writing me about them. Yes, of course I want them. Ha ha. Doesn’t everyone who loves Plath. But already at over $7500 USD, and things will no doubt get fierce toward the end of the bidding (which stops on the 21st at 9:22 a.m. central time).

Those who have read my book Fixed Stars Govern a Life: Decoding Sylvia Plath know that I have written that much of Plath’s poems were written based on imagery from the Rider-Waite tarot deck, different from this one. This tarot deck above is a Tarot de Marseille. Part of the reason I hold (and still hold) that the Rider-Waite imagery influenced Plath is because so much of it is clearly in the poems, most obviously in her “Poppies in October” which is the Rider-Waite Judgement (British spelling) card all over it. But throughout my book I make many references to Tarot de Marseille influence as well, occasionally with pictures, such as in my decoding of “Lady Lazarus” for The Lovers card. From Plath’s very first Ariel poem, “Morning Song,” the Marseille deck is named numerous times. But at the end of the day, no matter which deck you’re looking at, the tarot cards mean the same thing and FSGL remains relevant.

I’m not convinced that Sylvia or Ted didn’t also have a Rider-Waite deck, by the way, as it is the more famous one. Tarot expert Mary Greer told me that in 1956 London, the Rider-Waite would likely have been the easiest deck to find. Regardless, there is also The Painted Caravan, the book Plath used to teach her tarot. This book has other versions of the cards, and explanations of their meanings, as well as illustrations, based on the Rider-Waite system.

Academics have always rejected this tarot premise, and I am not surprised as they are notoriously atheistic, as well as probably ignorant to tarot and mysticism. (Also, who wants to learn that they might have missed key meanings all these years, or challenging ideas upon which their careers are based? Ouch! It makes sense to squash my work in that light) Some of the leading Plath “experts” are clearly ignorant to understanding poetry at all. Others teach it but have no understanding of creativity and certainly do not practice it. And then there are the scholars, like Dr. Ann Skea, who knows her mysticism yet she has written that she believes I am wrong. Skea told me herself that she had not read my work because she did not want to be influenced. Um, how can you critique work, or even challenge it, without reading it? This is reflective of much of the attitudes today: I am right, you are wrong, there is no debate and I’m not interested in hearing other sides. It’s disgusting, in my opinion.

I abandoned trying to find acceptance in the Plath camp long ago. I have been much more warmly embraced by other creatives, academics outside the Plath field (especially those interested in mysticism), and of course, practitioners of mysticism themselves. I really need to get some more books out but have been too busy with my tarot these past few years. The Decoding books on “Lady Lazarus” and “Daddy” sell steadily, and I have sold a number of PDFs of my first, now sold-out and out-of-print book, Fixed Stars Govern a Life.

But back to the auction: there is a terrible GoFundMe effort out there, to get a group of people to buy Plath’s tarot cards which they intend to break up and send one card to each funder. There are SO many reasons why this is wrong. From the spiritual point of view, I would never break up a tarot deck. From the materialistic point of view, this devalues the Plath-owned deck to virtually nothing. The pieces would no doubt be scattered and some would be cared for better than others. I told a client it reminds me of a story from the Bible, where wise King Solomon must decide which one of two women get a baby that they are both claiming to be their own. “This is easy,” says the King (I’m paraphrasing). “Grab a sword and split the baby down the middle so you can both share.” One woman panics and says no, no, please give him to the other woman. And Solomon knows then that the panicking woman is the true mother and gives her the child. My point being: these people in the GoFundMe don’t love Plath. They’re just fetishizing, like so many others out there, “for a piece of [her] hair or [her] clothes.” (“Lady Lazarus”).

Whoever does win Plath’s tarot cards, I believe, inherits a duty to them. These are hopefully to be well-preserved in acid-free paper, probably in an air-tight (and certainly water-tight) space with no or limited light. Ideally, these cards should be made available to scholars for research. I pray that either Indiana University or Smith College can come up with the cash to make these part of their outstanding Plath collections. In the meantime, we’ll be watching and holding our collective breath…

Me, July 2021, wearing one of my favorite tarot dresses for an event. Events are coming back! Yay!

Hi, Readers.

I have this bad lightbulb in my kitchen that, no matter how I tighten or loosen it, it does this irritating flash that feels like a strobe light. It gives me such a headache, and I would rather turn it off and fumble around in the dark than wince through that weird energy. It has been an entire summer of weird energy, hasn’t it? Funny how we all just endure this stuff rather than take the time to get up on a ladder and change the bulb.

Today, one of my favorite regular clients told me that I should change my title from “Tarot Card Reader” to “Intuitive Counselor.” I like that. The only problem is that the word counselor opens me up to a great deal of responsibility–some of it legal. Anyone who knows me and my work knows that I am not your average fortune-teller. Truth is, I am on a spiritual path, as we all are whether we know it or not. It’s my goal to get conscious of that path and teach my clients how to do the same. I want to learn about and share the tools I pick up to help others manage life. With regular tarot work, there will be revelations and understandings about your actions and energy to give you the guidance to make the decisions and changes you want.

What a busy summer it has been. I have had my own epiphanies and spiritual growth as I stumble through each day–often much less elegantly than I wish I could present here. As I said above, events are back and it feels good to get out of the house and away from Zoom/FaceTime/etc. which have been decent substitutes, but nothing beats an in-person reading and I think we’re all sick of screens. So far, events have been private parties but I am hoping we will soon return to festivals, etc. I do already have a Mardi Gras event on my calendar for 2022.

I am back to writing and have been working on poems at a fever pitch. So many, and I daresay I feel it is some of my best work. I’ll probably try to get some published again soon (There is always the joy in writing them, but not so much in the submission-rejection-acceptance process). My personal fitness program has dominated most of this year and last and I am in the best, strongest shape of my life, which isn’t half bad for 57 years old. I continue to volunteer at my beloved Wildlife Rescue Center, although I’ve cut my hours back, post-Covid. I’ve been doing a lot of traveling domestically, with another big trip soon. And maybe the most fun of all, I am back to seeing concerts as they return to our city. On my calendar: Wilco and Sleater-Kinney; Soul Asylum, Local H (I’m a rabid Local H fan), Juliana Hatfield and the Urge; Squeeze; Flash Forward Tribute to our dearly departed friend Pat Oldani; Alanis Morrisette, Garbage and Liz Phair; probably Dinosaur Jr; Alice Cooper; maybe the Toadies; definitely Local H (again); and Walk the Moon (singer Nick is a bestie). And who knows what else will be announced and added to the calendar? If you’re at a show and see me there, please say hello. Now, if I can only convince my husband Tom to attend the ones he is not playing in (He’s in the Flash Forward show with Pat Oldani’s old band, Starnineteen). Musicians never want to be in the audience. Ha.

As I wind this up, the heavens are opening up with more weather. Thunder is growling and the wind is blowing the birds erratically all over the sky while trees sway and bend to frightening degrees. It’s the kind of weather that feels scary to be out in, even though the rain has yet to start. But it’s all energy, right? And there is a thrill with the impending danger and a joyful feeling of being alive. I just need to find that joy back in my kitchen.

Well, given all of the social unrest of the past week, the pandemic feels like old news. My son Ross’s manager died suddenly last week at just 33 years old. Not from Covid-19 or violence, but from an undetected heart problem. That made me think then about how absolutely true it is that any of us can go at any time, no matter the precautions we take. I’ve been scared about Ross, in the midst of the protests in Richmond. I’ve been scared about his safety, but also his spirituality, that he doesn’t become eaten up with anger. I’ve been scared for my stepbrother Rodger, who had to evacuate his home in Philadelphia and doesn’t know what he will come back to, if anything. I could get all gloomy about that, but I choose to ask myself, am I fully living this life today?

Some of you know that a couple weeks ago I was in the ER with stomach pains that got called “IBS.” No doubt triggered by the stress of the times. Again. (Happily, I’m on a new diet/supplement/exercise plan of attack for that with my trainer, Chase Silverstein). I can grumble over occasional flare-ups, or I can celebrate that my body, for the most part, is doing a splendid job. I have both my eyes, all my limbs, and most of my teeth (had to have a molar pulled a year ago). And what can I do in this precious day, which might be the whole rest of my life?

I can choose many things. I might choose to become distraught and suffer over what I can’t change. Maybe I can change on a local level. Or maybe I can just look within myself. Is there any racism or stereotypes I’m overlooking that I am unaware of? Is my ego ruling my heart in presuming intellectual superiority over ignorance? How can I, on this day and each one going forward, always be kind and useful–to myself, to my loved ones, and to the world? That’s my new goal.

I started today with yoga and then my Buddhist women’s group. I’ll likely go for a quiet walk soon. And here I am writing, my favorite thing, which I keep getting too busy to do. I’ve been giving my Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons to the Wildlife Rescue Center, and all my time around that to tarot clients. I want to make sense of this experience while I am here. I want to become a better person each day, and I want that person to contribute positively to the world. I want to be a channel of love. I want to open dialogue instead of just shutting people out who disagree with me. I know that preaching to the choir has never worked, nor has hating people who have different opinions. War is no solution to war. It starts with me.

The picture above is called “Again Toward Morning,” by Jeanie Tomanek. Thanks to Ann Watters, who shared it in my group this morning.
